Psy’s “Gangnam Style” becomes most watched video in YouTube
Psy’s “Gangnam Style” has usurped Justin Bieber’s “Baby” as the most-viewed video in the history of YouTube, drawing 806 million hits as of November 25 compared to 804 million for Bieber’s song.
“Baby” needed 33 months to pass the 800-million mark after the music video was posted on YouTube on February 19, 2010, but it took Psy’s catchy hit just four months to achieve the milestone.
It first appeared on the video-sharing site on July 15 and shot past the 10-milllion mark in just over two weeks on August 2. It had attracted 100 million views by September 4, 500 million by October 20 and 700 million by November 11.
Psy’s achievement is all the more significant given that “Gangnam Style” was released only in digital format and on YouTube. In contrast, four of the top five most-viewed music videos on YouTube, including those by Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez and Eminem, took advantage of the global distribution channels of major record labels.
In early September, “Gangnam Style” was named the most “liked” music video in the history of the same website by Guinness World Records.
Congratulations Psy!
